Il Prof. Luca Steardo è autore di 170 lavori pubblicati su riviste internazionali ad alto fattore di impatto (di cui numerose invited reviews), di capitoli di libri italiani e stranieri ed editor di volumi di neuropsicofarmacologia e neuropsicobiologia, psichiatria biologica e neuroscienze (il primo pubblicato sotto l’egida del WHO nella serie WHO Experts Series on Neurosciences, n° 3 – Hograf and Huber, Seattle – USA sulla Farmacologia e Terapia con Benzodiazepine nelle sindromi psichiatriche ansiose e depressive, l’ultimo nel 2015, nella serie di Frontiers in Neuroscience sul ruolo degli astrociti e della neuroinfiammazione nella patogenesi delle malattie degenerative neurologiche e psichiatriche). É stato nel board scientifico di numerosissimi congressi italiani e stranieri (di Neuroscienze, Neuropicofarmacologia, Nurologia e Psichiatria), che per brevità non vengono riportati. Ha avuto una intensissima attività seminariale nelle più prestigiose Istituzioni Scientifiche ed Accademiche da Harvard a Stanford, dal Karolinka Institut alla Cambridge University, dal NIH di Bethesda alla Sorbone di Parigi, dall’università di Lovanio all’università del South California, dallo Skripps Institute di La Jolla (CA) ad Heidelberg. L’attività di ricerca nei primi anni focalizzò il ruolo funzionale dei sistemi peptidergici cerebrali e la loro interazione con la trasmisione monoaminergica in condizioni normali e di patologia neurologica e psichiatrica. Contemporaneamente si dedicò alla ricerca degli effetti delle sostanze psicoattive sui sistemi neuroendocrini, e alla regolazione nella fisiologia e nella patologia del drinking behavior. Identificò per primo i recettori cerebrali degli Atrial Peptides e i loro sistemi trasduttivi. Per primo, insieme a Pedro Cautrecasas, ipotizzò le modalità della trasmissione peptidergica nel sistema nervoso e delineò il metabolismo di alcuni peptidi in aree cerebrali critiche. In seguito, la sua attenzione fu attratta dal ruolo della pineale in condizioni fisiologiche o patologiche (soprattutto seasonal affective disorders). Negli ultimi anni il suo contributo scientifico è andato allo studio dei meccanismi cellulari e molecolari che sottendono le condotte di abuso (l’utilizzazione e la dipendenza da droghe) e i disturbi della condotta alimentare (anoressia e bulimia, entrambi gravissimi problemi per la psichiatria clinica). Si è peraltro interessato degli effetti dei farmaci attivi sul sistema nervosa sullo sviluppo nerospichico del feto e del neonato, quando questi composti son somministrati nelle condizioni di gravidanza e di allattamento. Inoltre, oggetto delle sue ricerche è stato il ruolo della neuroinfiammazione e della attivazione o dell’astenia gliale in modelli preclinici e clinici di patologie neurologiche e psichiatriche quali l’Alzheimer, l’autismo, le depressioni, il Parkinson, l’invecchiamento, la dipendenza da sostanze di abuso. Recentemente ha allargato il suo campo di indagini utilizzando il neuroimaging funzionale e chimico (Spettrscopia in Risonanza) per lo studio dell’impatto della terapia sulle condizioni neuropsichiatriche sopra menzionate. Contemporaneamente, con un gruppo di suoi collaboratori italiani e stranieri, sta investigando il possibile ruolo dell’asse cervello/intestino e intestino/cervello nella patologia di malattie intestinali ma soprattutto di malattie neuropsichiatriche fino ad oggi ritenute primitivamente e primariamente a genesi cerebrale, quali il morbo di Parkinson, alcune demenze, la depressione. Molti di questi dati sono già presenti nella bibliografia. A caratterizzare fortemente le line di ricerca vi è sempre il duplice approccio preclinico e clinico.
